RoomSketcher's free account lets you draw, furnish and view your design in low-resolution 3D; its 3D snapshots carry a watermark, and its free plan page says 2D and 3D floor plans need an in-app purchase before you can print or download them. The free plan page says up to two projects, while the pricing table lists a project archive of 10. Pro raises that to 100 projects and Team to 500.
Where RoomSketcher is the better choice
- Native apps that work offline on Windows, Mac, iPad and Android tablets, with cloud sync.
- AI renders and AI conversion. AI Render turns a project into photorealistic images, and AI Convert turns a JPG, PNG or PDF floor plan into an editable one. FloorGen has neither: its 3D is not photoreal, and its tracing is semi-automatic.
- A drafting service. Order a floor plan for $38 a floor and get 2D and 3D plans back the next business day. FloorGen has no such service.
- Shareable 3D. Live 3D links let others walk through the project for a year, and 360 views come with an embed code. FloorGen shares a downloaded view-only HTML file instead.
- Branding. Your logo, colours and letterhead on plans with Pro and Team.
- Teams. The Team plan includes 5 users and project collaboration.
Where FloorGen is the better choice
- Nothing to buy for output. PNG up to 4,500 px, PDF, SVG and print sets at a real scale, with no per-plan fee (free exports may carry a small FloorGen badge). On RoomSketcher's free plan each floor plan download is $4, and print to scale is a paid-plan feature.
- No account, any device. FloorGen starts without signing up and you can draw on a phone or a Chromebook as well as a computer or tablet.
- CAD and 3D files. DXF (R12) for CAD and glTF for Blender; we found no DXF, DWG or 3D model export on RoomSketcher's pages.
- Drawings beyond the plan. Elevations and sections from the plan, door and window schedules, and code checks against IRC, NBC, OBC, UK, DIN or CDMX rules.
- A walkthrough video file. MP4 at 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1, up to 1440p, to post or send.
- AI agents. An MCP server so Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor can read and edit your plan.
Switching from RoomSketcher
There is no importer for RoomSketcher projects. Bring the plan across as a picture and trace it:
- Get an image of each floor with its dimensions showing: a 2D floor plan PDF or PNG if you have one, or a screenshot of the plan view in the app.
- Start a trace in FloorGen with the button above and pick the file. For a PDF, choose the page.
- Set the scale from the longest dimension on the drawing.
- Accept the suggested walls or draw over them, then place doors, windows and furniture from FloorGen's library.
- Compare a few room areas with the RoomSketcher plan before you rely on the copy.
Questions
Is RoomSketcher free?
It has a free account with no expiry for drawing and furnishing, with low-resolution, watermarked 3D snapshots. Downloading or printing 2D and 3D floor plans on the free plan costs $4 each, per its pricing page.
Can I draw in RoomSketcher on my phone?
Not according to RoomSketcher: its app runs on computers and tablets, and phones get a web portal for viewing projects. FloorGen runs in a phone's browser.
Can FloorGen open RoomSketcher files?
No. Export an image or PDF of the plan and trace it; converting a floor plan image shows how.
