Floor plan software for homeowners
Draw the house you live in, try a new kitchen or an ADU on it, and hand your contractor a plan drawn to scale. FloorGen is free in the browser, with no sign-up to start.

Most homeowners open a floor plan tool for one of five reasons: to get a plan of the house they already own, to plan a remodel, to add space, to work out what the finishes will cost, or to show someone else what they have in mind. Each one needs something slightly different from the software.
What homeowners use it for
| Job | What helps |
|---|---|
| A plan of the house you have | Type each wall length, such as 11' 6", and the room areas update as you draw. Or trace a builder's plan, an old blueprint or a listing image after setting its scale from one known length. |
| A kitchen or bath remodel | Kitchen and bath templates, cabinets, appliances and fixtures among about 3,000 models, and an IRC (US) code profile that flags undersized rooms, bedrooms without an escape window and steep stairs. |
| An addition, ADU or finished basement | ADU, garage-conversion and basement templates, a roof you can show over the top floor, and elevations and sections generated from the plan. |
| What the finishes cost | Paint, flooring, tile, door, window and furniture estimates from the plan, plus the paint and flooring calculators. |
| Showing it to someone | A 3D walk mode, an MP4 walkthrough video, a print set PDF at a real scale, or a view-only HTML file the other person opens in any browser. |
Start from a plan close to yours
Starting from a similar house is faster than a blank page: move the walls to your measurements and keep the rest. Each of these opens in the studio, ready to edit.
A weekend workflow
- Measure. Wall to wall in each room, plus door and window positions. How to measure a room for a floor plan has a checklist.
- Draw or trace. Type wall lengths in feet and inches, or trace an old plan and correct it with your measurements.
- Check the numbers. Switch the dimension strings between centreline, inside and outside faces until they match what you measured.
- Save a version, then try the change. Version history keeps the house as it is, so you can compare it with the remodel or go back.
- Furnish it and walk through it. Place furniture from the library, or use Furnish as on a bedroom, living room, office or kids room for a first layout, then walk the rooms in 3D.
- Price it. The schedules list paint, flooring and tile quantities with waste included. The budget starts from rough US installed rates marked as placeholders; type in your own quotes to replace them.
- Print it. A print set PDF puts each floor on its own sheet at a real scale with a title block, on Letter up to ARCH D or A1.
What FloorGen doesn't do
- It does not approve anything. The code checks are a design aid. Your building department decides, and many want a licensed professional for structural work.
- No engineering. No beam or foundation sizing, and no framing, electrical or plumbing takeoffs.
- No photoreal renders. The 3D view is for checking sizes and how the rooms connect, not for a magazine picture.
- No hosted share link. You share a PDF, an image, a video or a downloaded view-only HTML file.
- Your plans live in this browser until you sign in. Clearing the browser's site data deletes them. Export the project file, or sign in with Google to keep a copy in the cloud.
Questions
Is FloorGen free for homeowners?
Yes. Every export is free and there is no project cap; free exports may carry a small FloorGen badge. Signing in is optional and adds cloud sync; the in-app AI chat is the one feature that needs it.
Can I use it to draw plans for a permit?
For small projects, many departments accept owner-drawn plans if they are to scale and complete. FloorGen prints scaled sheets with a title block, elevations and sections. Ask your department what it needs first; how to draw floor plans for a building permit covers the usual list.
I only have an old blueprint. Can I start from it?
Yes. Import a photo, scan or PDF of it, mark one known length to set the scale, then accept or draw the walls over it. Converting a floor plan image walks through it.
Does it work on an iPad?
Yes. FloorGen runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install. A larger screen is easier for drawing a whole house.
