How to plan a bedroom in FloorGen
- Draw the room. Open the 12 × 12 ft bedroom and drag its walls to your size, or press R and drag your own. Add the door (D) and windows (N) where they are: they decide which wall the bed can go on.
- Furnish it in one step. Right-click the room, choose Furnish as, then Bedroom or Kids room. FloorGen picks the bed by the room's size (a king from about 194 ft², 18 m²), adds two nightstands and a wardrobe, and a dresser in rooms over about 129 ft², all against the walls, clear of the door swing and with tall pieces off the windows. Shuffle furniture layout tries another arrangement; one undo removes it.
- Swap in your furniture. Press L and search "king bed", "nightstand" or "wardrobe". Select a piece to set its exact size, or drag it to another wall; press R while dragging to turn it.
- Check the space round the bed. Measure with the tape (M): 24 to 30 in each side you get in, 36 in at the foot. Review (Shift+I) flags a walkway under 75 cm (about 30 in) and a wardrobe in the door's way.
- Walk in. Press 3, then Walk, and stand in the doorway to see what you see first.
Will the bed fit?
| Mattress | Mattress size | Floor for bed and walkways |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38 × 75 in | 98 × 111 in (8 ft 2 in × 9 ft 3 in) |
| Full | 54 × 75 in | 114 × 111 in (9 ft 6 in × 9 ft 3 in) |
| Queen | 60 × 80 in | 120 × 116 in (10 ft × 9 ft 8 in) |
| King | 76 × 80 in | 136 × 116 in (11 ft 4 in × 9 ft 8 in) |
| California king | 72 × 84 in | 132 × 120 in (11 ft × 10 ft) |
So a queen fits a 10 × 10 ft room with nothing else; add nightstands and a dresser and 12 × 12 ft is comfortable. A king wants about 12 × 14 ft. Master bedroom size has the sizes that fit each set of furniture.
When is a room a legal bedroom?
Under the US International Residential Code a bedroom needs at least 70 ft² and 7 ft in every direction (2021 IRC R304), a ceiling of generally 7 ft (R305) and an emergency escape opening (R310). With the IRC profile on, FloorGen checks the area, the smallest dimension and whether a sleeping room has an opening big enough to escape through, and numbers any problem on the plan. A closet is not required by the IRC, though buyers and appraisers often expect one. Legal bedroom requirements has the details, and bedroom size requirements in Canada the NBC version.
