FloorGen vs Planner 5D

Planner 5D is a home design app on almost every platform, with photoreal renders, AI tools and live co-editing; its free plan opens half the catalogue. FloorGen is a free browser editor with the whole library, scaled drawings, DXF and code checks, but no photoreal renders. Where Planner 5D is the better choice

  • Apps everywhere. Native apps for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Apple Vision, plus the browser. FloorGen is browser-only.
  • Photoreal renders and AI images. Renders on paid plans, unlimited 4K and 360° panoramas on Professional, and AI Studio to restyle a photo of your room. FloorGen has no photoreal rendering or AI restyling.
  • Live co-editing, even free. Several people can edit and comment on one project at the same time. FloorGen has no real-time collaboration.
  • Automatic plan recognition. Upload a JPG, PDF, DWG or DXF and get an editable plan back (paid plans). FloorGen's tracing is semi-automatic and it does not read DWG, but it imports DXF as editable walls, doors and windows.
  • LiDAR scanning on an iPhone 12 Pro or iPad Pro to start from the real room.
  • Your own 3D models (OBJ, FBX, BLEND, STL and more) on Professional, and a design community with Design Battles.

Where FloorGen is the better choice

  • The whole library, free. All of FloorGen's 3,000 or so models are available to everyone, with no catalogue tier.
  • Output for any use. The terms let you use what you draw in your own plans and exports, paid work included; free exports may carry a small FloorGen badge. Planner 5D's free renders are watermarked and for personal use.
  • CAD without a Professional plan. DXF (R12) for every plan. Planner 5D's DWG and DXF export is on Professional.
  • Drawings to scale. Print sets on Letter up to ARCH D or A1 with a title block, elevations and sections, and dimension strings to centreline, inside or outside faces.
  • Code checks and quantities. Room sizes, stairs and escape windows under IRC, NBC, OBC, UK, DIN or CDMX rules, and paint, flooring and tile quantities with a budget.
  • A walkthrough video of the design as an MP4 at 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1, without credits.
  • An MCP server for any AI app. Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or another MCP client can edit plans through FloorGen's server at a URL.

Switching from Planner 5D

FloorGen has no importer for Planner 5D projects. Export a PDF and trace it:

  1. Export the plan to PDF from Planner 5D on the web (available on every plan), with the dimensions showing.
  2. Start a trace in FloorGen with the button above, pick the PDF and choose the page.
  3. Set the scale from the longest overall dimension.
  4. Accept the suggested walls or draw over them, then furnish again from FloorGen's library; Planner 5D furniture and materials do not carry over.
  5. Check the room areas against the original before you rely on the copy.
