Draw a floor plan in the browser with walls to 1/16 in or 1 mm, real doors and windows, and about 3,000 furniture models, then walk through it in 3D and export a scaled PDF, PNG or DXF. FloorGen is free and starts without an account.

How to make a floor plan in FloorGen

  1. Start. Open a blank plan. The empty canvas offers Draw a room, Draw walls, Trace an image and Use a template. Units are feet and inches or metric, and you can switch later without redrawing.
  2. Draw the rooms. Press R and drag a rectangle for each room, or press W for walls and click from corner to corner. While drawing a wall, type its length, press Tab for the angle and Enter to place it. Hold Shift to keep it straight.
  3. Add doors and windows. Press D for a door or N for a window and click on a wall. F places a double door, S a sliding one and O an open passage; pocket, bifold and overhead garage doors are under Door & window in the toolbar.
  4. Furnish. Press L to open the Library, search it, then drag a piece onto the plan or click it to drop it in a free spot. Right-click a room and choose Furnish as to fill a bedroom, living room, office or kids room in one step.
  5. Check it. Every room shows its net area as you draw. The Review panel (Shift+I) numbers problems on the plan: rooms under the code minimum, bedrooms without an escape window, doors blocked by furniture, narrow walkways.
  6. See it and share it. Press 3 for 3D and 2 to come back. Export has the 2D plan, a 3D image, a print set, CAD files and a view-only page you can send to anyone.

What a plan can hold

  • Several floors, including basements, each with its own height, and stairs and lifts that span them.
  • Alternative designs of the same floor, so you can try two kitchen layouts without losing either.
  • Kitchen runs (press J and drag along a wall: base units, worktop and plinth fill in), balconies, terraces, railings and floor cut-outs.
  • Notes, dimension lines (Shift+M), a north arrow and section lines (X) that draw a section view.
  • A building code profile: IRC (US), NBC Canada, OBC (Ontario), UK Approved Documents, DIN (Germany), CDMX (Mexico City) or generic, which sets what the Review panel checks.

Start from a real plan

Redrawing a house from nothing is the slow part. FloorGen has 27 editable templates: US houses from a 1,500 sq ft starter to a 4-bed two-story, ADUs, a duplex and a fourplex, single kitchens, baths and bedrooms, and Canadian, Mexican, UK and German plans. Each opens as an ordinary project with the right code profile, ready to change. The floor plan gallery shows them all with their sizes.

What it does not do

  • No photoreal rendering: the 3D view is a clean, lit model, not a ray-traced image.
  • No DWG or IFC export. DXF works both ways: an export opens in AutoCAD, LibreCAD and most CAD programs, and an imported DXF becomes editable walls, doors and windows.
  • No real-time editing by several people at once; you share a plan as a view-only file.
  • The code checks are a design aid. A plan that passes them is not a permit approval.

Questions

Is FloorGen really free?

Yes. The editor, the templates, the 3D view and every export are free; free exports may carry a small FloorGen badge. Exports and the in-app AI need a free account.

Do I need to sign up?

No. Plans save in your browser. Sign in with Google when you want them backed up to the cloud and on your other devices.

Can I draw a house with more than one floor?

Yes. Add floors above or a basement below, each with its own height; stairs span floors, and the 3D view stacks them.

Can I open my plan in AutoCAD?

Export it as DXF from Export → CAD and 3D. Floor plan to DXF covers the layers and units. There is no DWG export.

Does it work on an iPad or phone?

Yes, in the browser on phones and tablets, with touch controls. A larger screen is easier for detailed drawing.
