FloorGen vs magicplan

magicplan captures existing buildings on site: it scans rooms with a phone's LiDAR or camera, takes laser-meter readings, and turns them into reports and estimates for contractors and claims work. FloorGen is a free browser editor for designing and drawing a plan. Checked October 2026 against magicplan's own site, help center and App Store listing.

We make FloorGen, and the two tools mostly do different jobs: magicplan measures what is there, FloorGen designs what could be. Many people would use both. magicplan's PRO plan prices load only in the browser and were not shown to us, so the prices below are the in-app subscriptions on its US App Store listing.

Where magicplan is the better choice

  • Measuring an existing building. LiDAR scanning on an iPhone 12 Pro or newer and iPad Pro, camera scanning on iOS, and readings from over 20 Bluetooth laser meters from Bosch, Leica, Stanley and others. FloorGen does not scan or connect to a laser meter; you measure and type.
  • Restoration and insurance claims. Exports for Xactimate (ESX) and Cotality (FML), site photos and 360s pinned to rooms, custom forms and automatic PDF reports.
  • Estimates from the field. Your own price lists turned into PDF or XLS estimates from the measured plan.
  • Field and office teams. Workspaces with unlimited users and instant sync from the crew's phones to the office.
  • BIM and integrations. IFC export on Report and PRO, a REST API, and 35 listed integrations including QuickBooks, Salesforce and Jobber.

Where FloorGen is the better choice

  • Designing, not just measuring. About 3,000 furniture and fixture models against magicplan's 150-plus objects, Furnish as for a first layout, and 3D walk mode to try a remodel before it is built.
  • Free beyond two projects. No project cap, no subscription and no per-project fee.
  • A full editor on a computer. FloorGen is built for a large screen and a mouse as well as a tablet; magicplan's desktop editing is a beta and some sketch tools need a mobile device.
  • Drawings with dimensions. Print sets at a real scale up to ARCH D with a title block, elevations and sections, and a DXF that includes the dimension strings. magicplan notes its DXF export does not include dimensions.
  • Walkthrough videos. MP4 at 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1 up to 1440p, rendered from the design.
  • Code checks for rooms, stairs and escape windows under IRC, NBC, OBC, UK, DIN or CDMX rules.
  • AI agents that edit. FloorGen's MCP server lets Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor change the plan, not only read it.

Using both, or switching

FloorGen has no importer for magicplan projects. A DXF of the plan imports as editable walls, doors and windows, and a magicplan PDF or image traces well, because a scanned plan is already to scale:

  1. Scan or measure the house in magicplan and export the floor plan as a PDF or PNG with its dimensions.
  2. Start a trace in FloorGen with the button above and pick the file; for a PDF, choose the floor's page.
  3. Set the scale from the longest overall dimension on the export.
  4. Accept the suggested walls, check two room sizes against magicplan's figures, then design the remodel, furnish it and print the set.

Questions

Is magicplan free?

It has a free Starter plan with two projects and every feature, with no time limit. Beyond that, magicplan sells in-app subscriptions (Sketch, Report, Estimate) and PRO plans for teams.

Can FloorGen scan a room with my phone?

No. FloorGen has no LiDAR or camera scanning. Measure with a tape or laser and type the lengths, or trace an existing plan. If scanning is the job, magicplan is built for it.

Does magicplan work on a computer?

magicplan Cloud runs in a browser for managing projects, with desktop editing offered as a beta; magicplan says some sketching tools need a mobile device. FloorGen works fully in a desktop browser.

Which is better for a remodeling contractor?

For measuring the existing house and producing reports or estimates on site, magicplan. For designing the new layout with furniture, a 3D walkthrough and a scaled plan set, FloorGen. See FloorGen for builders.
