FloorGen vs SmartDraw
SmartDraw is a paid diagramming suite that draws floor plans among flowcharts, org charts and network diagrams, in 2D. FloorGen is a free editor that only does floor plans, with walls, rooms, 3D and walkthrough videos. Checked October 2026 against SmartDraw's own pricing, support and feature pages.

We make FloorGen. SmartDraw is a different kind of product: a general diagramming tool used across whole companies, with floor plans as one template family. The comparison below is about floor plans only. SmartDraw facts come from smartdraw.com and support.smartdraw.com in October 2026.

SmartDraw bills yearly only; its support pages say there is no monthly plan and offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. The Team plan has a three-user minimum, and Enterprise is listed from $99 per user per year. Its floor plan page is candid that if photorealistic 3D is the goal, a floor plan tool will suit better.
Where SmartDraw is the better choice
- More than floor plans. Flowcharts, org charts, network and IT diagrams, timelines and engineering drawings in one tool and one licence. FloorGen draws floor plans only.
- Visio work. It batch-imports Visio files and exports VSDX.
- Working inside other tools. Integrations with Microsoft Teams, Confluence, Jira, Google Workspace, SharePoint and OneDrive, plus SSO and admin controls on Enterprise.
- Team editing and comments. Several people can edit a drawing, comment and share a link that viewers open without an account. FloorGen has no real-time co-editing or hosted links.
- Scaled 2D drawings for business. Drawing scales in metric or imperial, and a Google Maps import for site plans, suit office space planning.
Where FloorGen is the better choice
- Free. No trial clock and no subscription for any feature; free exports may carry a small FloorGen badge.
- 3D and video. Orbit, dollhouse and walk modes, and an MP4 walkthrough video at 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1. SmartDraw floor plans are 2D.
- A plan that knows it is a building. Walls with thickness, rooms that report their area, doors and windows that cut their walls and fill a schedule, stairs and multiple floors.
- Drawings from the plan. Elevations and sections generated from the model, and print sets at a real scale up to ARCH D or A1.
- CAD out. DXF (R12) for AutoCAD, LibreCAD or QCAD. We found no DXF or DWG export on SmartDraw's pages.
- Code checks and quantities. Room sizes, stairs and escape windows checked against IRC, NBC, OBC, UK, DIN or CDMX rules, and paint, flooring and tile quantities.
- About 3,000 furniture models in 3D, each resizable to your own pieces, rather than 2D symbols.
Both have an MCP server for AI assistants. SmartDraw's generates diagrams of many kinds from a prompt; FloorGen's 151 tools edit floor plans specifically (walls, rooms, doors, furniture and checks). See FloorGen for AI agents.
Switching from SmartDraw
FloorGen cannot import SmartDraw or Visio files. Bring a floor plan across as a picture:
- Export the plan as a PDF or PNG from SmartDraw with its dimensions visible.
- Start a trace in FloorGen with the button above and pick the file.
- Set the scale by marking the longest dimension and typing its length.
- Accept the suggested walls or draw over them; walls in FloorGen have a real thickness, so match the drawing's wall widths.
- Add doors, windows and furniture again, then check room areas against the SmartDraw drawing.

Can FloorGen open Visio or SmartDraw files?
No. Export a PDF or image and trace it; converting a floor plan image explains how.
