Rug size calculator
Pick the room, enter its size and the border of bare floor you want, then the sofa, the bed or the dining table. The calculator finds the standard rug size that suits the furniture and fits the room, and draws it under the furniture to scale.
Rug size calculator
Ruggable suggests 12 to 18 in in most rooms and 18 to 36 in around a 10 × 14.
84 in is a typical 3-seat sofa (Dimensions.com: 72 to 96 in).

How it works
- The largest rug the room takes: the room's length and width, each less the border twice.
- The smallest rug the furniture asks for. Living room, all legs on: the sofa's length by the sofa, the gap and the coffee table (35 + 16 + 24 in). Front legs on: Mohawk Home's chart for the sofa's length. Floating: no minimum, but the rug must fit between the sofa and the coffee table's far side (24 + 2 × 16 in), so no leg touches it. Bedroom: the bed's width plus the overhang each side, by two-thirds of its length plus the overhang at the foot. Dining: the table plus the pull-back on every side.
- The answer: in a living room, the largest standard size between the two (a seating group looks better on more rug); in a bedroom or dining room, the smallest that covers the furniture. A rug may turn either way.
- When nothing fits both, the largest rug the room takes, marked as smaller than the furniture asks for.
Worked example
A 15 × 12 ft living room with an 18 in border takes a rug up to 12 × 9 ft. An 84 in sofa with its front legs on wants at least an 8 × 10 by Mohawk's chart. Both 8 × 10 and 9 × 12 fit between those limits, and the calculator picks the 9 × 12: it leaves exactly 18 in all round and covers 60% of the floor. A 10 × 14 would run into the border.
| Room and furniture | Settings | Rug |
|---|---|---|
| 11 × 14 ft living room, 84 in sofa | Front legs on, 18 in border | 8 × 10 ft |
| 12 × 15 ft living room, 84 in sofa | Front legs on, 18 in border | 9 × 12 ft |
| 14 × 18 ft living room, 84 in sofa | All legs on, 18 in border | 10 × 14 ft |
| Any living room, floating | 24 in coffee table, 16 in gaps | 4 × 6 ft |
| Queen bed, 14 × 12 ft room | 24 in showing, 12 in border | 7 × 10 ft |
| King bed, 14 × 12 ft room | 24 in showing, 12 in border | 9 × 12 ft |
| Table for 4 (36 × 48 in) | 24 in past each edge | 7 × 10 ft |
| Table for 6 (36 × 72 in) | 24 in past each edge | 7 × 10 ft |
| Table for 8 (40 × 96 in) | 24 in past each edge | 9 × 12 ft |
| Table for 10 (44 × 120 in) | 24 in past each edge | 10 × 14 ft |
Table sizes are from our dining room dimensions guide. A 10 × 12 ft living room with an 18 in border takes only a 6 × 9, smaller than an 84 in sofa asks for; drop the border to 12 in and an 8 × 10 fits.
Before you buy
- Tape it out. Mark the rug's outline on the floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day.
- Mind the doors. A thick rug under a door's swing can stop it opening; leave the swing clear or check the clearance under the door.
- In a dining room, the room itself needs 36 in from the table to the wall to pull a chair out, as the calculator checks; a rug cannot fix a room that is too small for the table.
- Runners and rounds are not included: measure a round table's diameter plus 24 in each side and look for a round rug that size.
Questions
What size rug for a living room?
Most often an 8 × 10 or a 9 × 12 ft. With the sofa against a wall, put at least its front legs on the rug: Mohawk Home pairs a sofa up to 7 ft with an 8 × 10 or larger. Leave 12 to 18 in of floor at the walls.
What size rug goes under a queen bed?
A 7 × 10 or 8 × 10 ft, placed across the bed under its lower two-thirds, so about 24 in shows on each side and past the foot. A king takes an 8 × 10 to a 9 × 12.
How far should a dining rug extend past the table?
About 24 in on every side, so the chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. A six-seat 36 × 72 in table takes a 7 × 10 ft rug.
How much floor should show around a rug?
Ruggable suggests 12 to 18 in in most rooms, and 18 to 36 in around a 10 × 14 in a large room. Mohawk Home advises against a rug that touches the baseboards.
Is a 5 × 7 rug too small for a living room?
Under a coffee table with the seating off it, it can work if it fits between the sofa and the table's far side; with 16 in gaps around a 24 in table that limit is 56 in, so a 4 × 6 fits and a 5 × 7 just reaches under the sofa. With seating on it, a 5 × 7 suits only a loveseat up to 4 ft by Mohawk's chart.
