Square feet to square metres
Type in either box and the other one updates: square feet to square metres (square meters) and back, with square yards, acres and hectares alongside, and the area drawn to scale beside a bedroom, a garage, a parking space or a tennis court. The factor is exact, so the answers match any spreadsheet.
Square feet to square metres
1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² exactly (1 ft = 0.3048 m). 1 m² = 10.7639 ft². An acre is 43,560 ft²; a hectare is 10,000 m².

The formula
A foot is defined as exactly 0.3048 m, so a square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 m², exactly. Going the other way, 1 m² is about 10.7639 ft².
- Square feet to square metres: m² = ft² × 0.09290304. A rough check in your head: divide by 10, then take off 7%.
- Square metres to square feet: ft² = m² × 10.7639. In your head: multiply by 10, then add 7.6%.
- Square yards: ft² ÷ 9. Carpet is often sold by the square yard in the US.
- Acres and hectares: an acre is 43,560 ft² (4,046.86 m²); a hectare is 10,000 m² (107,639 ft², about 2.47 acres).
Worked example
A 1,500 sq ft house: 1,500 × 0.09290304 = 139.35 m². The mental shortcut gives 150 less 7% = 139.5 m², close enough to sanity-check a listing. A 75 m² European flat the other way: 75 × 10.7639 = 807.3 ft².
Mind which area you are converting. A listing's square footage is usually measured to the outside of the walls; a European flat's living area (in Germany, the Wohnfläche) is measured inside the rooms and may count balconies at a fraction. The conversion is exact; the two figures still measure different things.

How big is that?
The drawing puts your area, as a square, beside something of a known size at the same scale. 1,000 ft² is a square about 31.6 ft (9.64 m) a side, close to seven 12 × 12 ft bedrooms.
| Reference | Size | Square feet | Square metres |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | 12 × 12 ft | 144 ft² | 13.38 m² |
| Two-car garage | 20 × 20 ft | 400 ft² | 37.16 m² |
| Parking space | 9 × 18 ft | 162 ft² | 15.05 m² |
| Tennis court (doubles lines) | 78 × 36 ft | 2,808 ft² | 260.87 m² |
A doubles tennis court is 78 × 36 ft (23.77 × 10.97 m), measured to the outside of the lines, under the ITF Rules of Tennis 2026, rule 1. A two-car garage is about 20 × 20 ft at the small end and 24 × 24 ft with room to open doors; garage dimensions has the rest. Parking stall sizes are set by each city's zoning code, so 9 × 18 ft is only a common example: check yours.
Working in both systems
If you are planning a room in one system and buying in the other, it is easier to draw the plan once and switch its units. FloorGen plans can show feet and inches (to 1/16 in) or metric (to 1 mm), and the room areas change units with them; the plan itself never changes. Metric vs imperial floor plans covers the habits on each side of the border.
Questions
How many square metres is 1,000 square feet?
92.90 m². Multiply square feet by 0.09290304.
How many square feet is 100 square metres?
1,076.4 ft². Multiply square metres by 10.7639.
Is a square metre about 10 square feet?
A little more: 10.76 ft². Using 10 understates an area in square feet by about 7%, which is enough to buy too little flooring.
How many acres is a hectare?
About 2.47 acres. A hectare is 10,000 m² and an acre is 43,560 ft², which is 4,046.86 m².
What is the difference between square metres and square meters?
None. "Metre" is the spelling used in Canada, the UK and most English outside the US; "meter" is the US spelling. Both are m².
