Couch to TV Distance: How Far to Sit From Every Screen Size
Couch to TV distance by screen size: sit about 1.2 to 1.6 times the diagonal away, from the 30° and 40° viewing angles, plus mounting height and a real room.
The right couch to TV distance is about 1.2 to 1.6 times the screen's diagonal, measured from the screen to your eyes: about 5½ to 7½ ft for a 55 in TV, 6½ to 9 ft for a 65 in, and 7½ to 10 ft for a 75 in. Those two numbers come from viewing angles. At 1.6 times the diagonal the picture fills about 30° of your view, the minimum SMPTE gives for a cinema; at 1.2 times it fills about 40°, the immersive figure RTINGS uses for movies. Then mount the screen so its centre is near seated eye level, about 42 in off the floor.
Below is the distance for every common screen size, the TV size for a given distance, how high to mount it, and a worked example in a real living room where the sofa turns out to be too far away. For the rest of the room's spacing, see living room layout.
TV viewing distance by screen size
| Screen (diagonal) | Immersive, 40° (about 1.2×) | Relaxed, 30° (about 1.6×) |
|---|---|---|
| 43 in | 4 ft 3½ in | 5 ft 10 in |
| 50 in | 5 ft | 6 ft 9½ in |
| 55 in | 5 ft 6 in | 7 ft 5½ in |
| 65 in | 6 ft 6 in | 8 ft 9½ in |
| 75 in | 7 ft 6 in | 10 ft 2 in |
| 85 in | 8 ft 6 in | 11 ft 6 in |
| 98 in | 9 ft 9½ in | 13 ft 3½ in |
Anywhere between the two columns is fine; the closer column is for movies and games, the farther one for a room where the TV is one thing among many. Sitting farther than the 30° column is not harmful, the picture just looks small and fine detail is lost.
What size TV for my distance?
Turn the table around when the sofa cannot move. Measure from the wall where the screen will go to where your head is when you sit back:
| Screen to eyes | 30° (smallest that fills the view) | 40° (immersive) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 ft | 44 in | 60 in |
| 7 ft | 52 in | 70 in |
| 8 ft | 59 in | 80 in |
| 9 ft | 66 in | 90 in |
| 10 ft | 74 in | 100 in |
| 11 ft | 81 in | 110 in |
| 12 ft | 89 in | 120 in |
| 13 ft | 96 in | 130 in |
Where the numbers come from
A screen fills an angle of your view that depends on its width and your distance: distance = width ÷ (2 × tan(angle ÷ 2)). A 16:9 screen is 0.872 times its diagonal wide, so 30° works out to 1.63 times the diagonal and 40° to 1.20 times. Measure to your eyes, not to the front of the sofa: seated, your eyes are roughly over the middle of the seat, a foot or more behind the front edge of a deep sofa.
How high to mount the TV
SANUS, a TV mount maker, puts the ideal height at the centre of the screen level with your eyes when seated, which averages 42 in. Consumer Reports gives a check for a wall-mounted set: the bottom of the screen no higher than your eye level seated, and the top no higher than your eye level standing. Centred at 42 in, a 55 in screen runs from about 28½ to 55½ in off the floor, a 65 in from 26 to 58 in and a 75 in from about 23½ to 60½ in.
Over a fireplace the centre usually ends up far above 42 in. If it has to go there, Consumer Reports suggests a tilting or articulating mount so the screen can be angled down toward the seats.
Worked example: a 15 × 19 ft living room
The living room in FloorGen's 3-bed ranch template is 15 ft 7½ in × 19 ft 6½ in inside, 305.3 ft². It is furnished with a 3-seat sofa against the east wall, a coffee table, an armchair and a 55 in TV on a low unit against the west wall, facing the sofa across the room.

Measured on the plan, the middle of the sofa is about 13 ft from the screen. A 55 in TV fills only about 17° of the view from there, about half the 30° minimum; by the table, 13 ft wants a 96 in screen. Two better options:
- A 75 in TV, sofa about 3 ft off the wall. Eyes 10 ft 2 in from the screen, 30°, and about 35 in behind the sofa for a walkway or a console table.
- A 65 in TV, sofa about 4 ft off the wall. Eyes about 8 ft 10 in from the screen, 30°, with a wider walkway behind.
Two more things the plan shows. The template's screen sits on a 20 in high unit with its centre about 34½ in off the floor, 7½ in below the 42 in guideline, so a wall mount or a taller unit would help. And FloorGen flags the 6 ft TV unit as crowding the opening to the kitchen: on that wall it sits between the opening from the entry and the floor in front of the kitchen opening, about 5 ft apart, so a unit 5 ft wide or less fits where this one does not.

A smaller room can get it right by accident. In FloorGen's 800 sq ft ADU the living room is only about 9 ft across, the sofa faces the TV across it, and the middle of the sofa is about 6 ft 8 in from a 55 in screen, between the 40° and 30° figures; see small living room layout.
Checklist
- Measure the distance to your eyes, roughly the middle of the seat, not the front of the sofa.
- Pick a screen between the 30° and 40° columns for that distance.
- Centre it near 42 in, or at least keep the bottom edge below seated eye level.
- Keep the main walkway behind the sofa or around the seating group, not between the sofa and the screen.
- Avoid a window behind the viewers that reflects in the screen, or plan for blinds.
