What FloorGen AI can do

Updated 5 min readNeeds a free account

FloorGen AI is a chat in the editor that changes your plan when you describe what you want, such as “widen the kitchen 2 ft”. It can also check the plan and explain what is on it. Every change is a step you can undo.

Open FloorGen AI

  1. Step 1: Open the chat

Click AI in the top bar, press ⌘I, or click Ask FloorGen AI at the bottom right of the plan. On a phone it opens as a sheet from the bottom.

  2. Step 2: Say what to change

Type in the box that reads Ask, or tell FloorGen AI what to change… and press ↵. A new chat suggests things to try for the open plan.

  3. Step 3: Watch the steps

Each edit appears in the reply as a step, and what changed glows on the plan. Click a step to see it on the plan.

You can also choose Ask FloorGen AI in the command palette (⌘K), select something and click Ask AI on its pill, or click Fix with AI on a problem in the Review panel. While the glow is on, a chip such as ✦ 3 changes · Dismiss floats over the plan; the glow and the chip go when you click Dismiss or make your next edit.

Start from the home page

  1. Step 4: Describe your plan

On floorgen.app, type in the Describe your plan box at the top or at the foot of the page, such as “A 3-bed ranch, about 1,800 sq ft, with a garage”. Press / to jump to the box. It takes up to 2,000 characters.

  2. Step 5: Click Generate plan

Click Generate plan or press ↵. Signed out, the sign-in dialog opens showing your prompt; sign in and FloorGen carries on.

  3. Step 6: Watch it draw

FloorGen makes a blank project named after your prompt, in the units it is written in (sq ft gives feet and inches, m² gives metres), opens it and sends the prompt to FloorGen AI once.

The prompt waits up to 30 minutes while you sign in. If FloorGen AI is locked for your account, the prompt is left in the chat box for you instead of being sent.

It asks before big or risky changes

  • Before a whole new home or many rooms, it can show a Proposed plan card: each room with its target area and the rooms it sits next to, the total, such as 1,800 ft² in all, and what it assumed (Assuming: …). Click Build it, or Adjust… to change the brief. A card you leave unanswered builds nothing.
  • Deleting a floor, a design or a room, replacing a floor with a copy, clearing a design or emptying the trash waits for you on a Confirm this change card. It says what will happen, such as Deletes 4 walls., and shows Expires at …, about 5 minutes after it appears. Click Confirm or Cancel.
  • An expired card reads This confirmation expired. Ask again to redo it. Click Ask again. If you send a new message instead of answering, the card reads Not answered: a new message was sent, so nothing was changed.
  • If a reply changes much more than you asked for, a card titled This is bigger than you asked for offers Keep going or Stop here. What changed stays either way; Undo all rolls it back.

When FloorGen AI asks a question

If your message could mean more than one thing, a FloorGen AI asks card shows the question with a button for each answer. Hover an answer that names something on the plan to see it selected there, then click the answer to send it. To point at something yourself, click Pick on the plan…: the box fills with This one (selected on the plan). Select the thing on the plan and send. Only the latest card can be answered.

It remembers preferences

Tell it a lasting rule, such as “Remember: corridors at least 1.2 m”, and it follows it in this project’s chats. Ask it to keep a rule for all your projects and the list marks it All projects. Each rule is one line of up to 200 characters. Up to 20 rules are kept for a project, both kinds counted, and each message sends the newest rules that fit in about 1 KB, so long rules leave room for fewer. Open What FloorGen AI remembers from the panel header to see the list, and click the bin button beside a rule to forget it. Where guests can use FloorGen AI, a guest’s rules are kept for this visit only.

Questions

Does it replace my plan?

No. It edits the plan you have open, one step at a time, and saves a checkpoint before its first edit. A new layout goes into a new design when you ask for one.

Why does FloorGen AI list problems the Review panel doesn’t?

Its check is wider. Besides the Review checks it looks for wall gaps, open wall ends, doubled walls, rooms with no name, door or window, floors no stair reaches, façade faults and furniture faults. See Checks only FloorGen AI and agents run.

Which language does it answer in?

It replies in the language the app is set to.

Is FloorGen AI the same as connecting Claude or ChatGPT?

No. FloorGen AI is built into the editor. To use your own AI app instead, see Agents and API keys.
